Me levanté, sudando frío, y miré hacia afuera.
Hasko’s Diary: The Night I Heard Laughter in the Field
Last night was a strange one. I was alone on the farm, same as always, when suddenly I heard laughter, soft and distant, coming from the field. Figured it was just the town kids playin’ a prank, so I didn’t pay it much mind. But as the night grew darker, the laughter got clearer and closer. It was like someone was just a few yards away, gigglin' out there in the pitch-black.
I grabbed my lantern and headed out, ready to scare off whoever was messin' around. But when I reached the exact spot where the sound was comin' from, there was no one there. Just an empty field, wind rustling through the grass, and an owl hootin' somewhere nearby. A shiver ran down my spine, but I shrugged it off. “Night noises,” I thought. I went back inside, locked the door, and turned off the lights.
Just as I was driftin' off to sleep, the laughter came again, this time so close it sounded like it was right outside the window. I sat up, cold sweat runnin’ down my back, and looked out. I didn’t see a thing, but the laughter continued, low and soft, like someone whisperin' secrets I wasn’t meant to hear.
I couldn’t ignore it any longer. I grabbed my lantern, stepped out onto the porch, and shouted, “Who’s out there?!” Silence answered me… and then, like the very air was playin’ tricks, a quiet voice whispered back, “It’s us, Hasko… we’ve come to play.” My heart skipped a beat. My lantern shook as I tried to see where the voice was comin' from, but there wasn’t a soul around.
I bolted back inside, locked every door and window, and hid under the covers. The laughter faded, like it was carried off on the wind, but that night I didn’t sleep a wink. And ever since, sometimes, when night falls and all goes still… I swear I can hear that laughter again, out there in the field, waitin' for me.
